Zero-accident vision in HSE work

Bilde

We all share responsibility for health, environment, and safety in the workplace. At Norsk Kylling, our HSE work is founded on a zero-accident vision – we believe that all serious incidents can be prevented. Therefore, we work systematically with learning and improvement to create a safe and healthy workplace.

Emergency preparedness organisation

In 2024, we focused on further developing the emergency preparedness organisation at our facilities through drills and training of personnel. In the event of an accident, unforeseen situation, or emergency, good preparedness is absolutely crucial.

Emergency measures were activated five times during the year. One of these was in May, when many employees at the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet) went on strike. Mattilsynet has offices at our slaughterhouse and processing plant, and it is a legal requirement that their representatives are present for inspections and controls during slaughter.

The strike posed a potential tragedy for both people and animals, which would have severely impacted production and the farmers’ income. We also would have had to discard 60 tons of food daily. Fortunately, the strike was called off in time. We were able to activate early preparedness and make solid plans for those who would have been directly affected, especially employees in production, farmers delivering chickens for slaughter, and the logistics chain.

HSE deviations make us better

It is important for us to create a safe and developing workplace for everyone working here. Our 18 safety representatives conduct monthly safety rounds in their respective departments, and during 2024, a total of 134 rounds were completed across the organisation.

Receiving 298 HSE deviations throughout the year shows that many people dare to speak up – and this provides us with valuable input for our improvement work. The deviations directly contribute to more targeted and effective HSE efforts.

Environmental Lighthouse Award of the year

Norsk Kylling was awarded the Environmental Lighthouse Award 2024 for corporations and large enterprises. The recognition honors a comprehensive effort in sustainability and the work environment, where ambitious goals, concrete measures, and strong execution have created real results. The jury particularly highlights how we integrate sustainability throughout the entire operation – from production and animal welfare to innovation and energy utilisation.

The award is a great motivation for continued efforts and is the result of the dedication of many engaged employees. Through collaboration, responsibility, and transparency, we have demonstrated that change is possible, and the development continues with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 51 percent by 2030.
